To software founders:

I founded Spring Street to be the buyer I always wanted when selling my software companies.

Growing up in Australia, I watched my parents pour their lives into our family business. My father’s tireless work ethic and commitment to his employees left a lasting impact on me. It wasn’t just about hard work—it was about creating places where people could succeed and grow. That foundation, paired with my passion for technology, led me into the world of startups, where I built, scaled, and eventually sold two software companies.

Selling a business, as I quickly discovered, isn’t a walk in the park. Private equity and strategic buyers have their own quirks; not all are pleasant. There was nothing more frustrating than a finance person armed with a spreadsheet claiming they understood my business better than I did, then telling me how bad it was just to drive down their offer. Timelines dragged on, terms morphed, and stress piled up.

Too often, investors without software expertise made things even tougher than they needed to be, leaving me feeling drained and frustrated. And through it all, my biggest concern was for the people who helped build the business—my employees, my customers, and the community that had supported me from the beginning.

After going through that experience, one thing became crystal clear: software founders should feel good about selling their companies. Founders need a buyer who understands the nuances of building a software company—someone with expertise to ensure their employees, customers, and community will be looked after–a buyer who values the business just as much as they do. A buyer who keeps the process simple, transparent, and efficient without adding unnecessary hurdles. It’s not rocket science.

In business school, I saw how large companies had perfected seamless acquisitions, but that level of care didn’t extend to smaller businesses. So I thought, “Why not become that buyer?” I moved to the U.S.—where many of the software founders I admired were—and started Spring Street Capital to become the buyer I wished I’d had when selling my own companies. Today, I’m proud to have the financial backing and operational support from some of the best software operators and institutional investors in the world.
